St. Mark’s Caribbean Night 2025: A Joyful Celebration of Culture and Community

St. Mark’s Caribbean Night 2025: A Joyful Celebration of Culture and Community

On October 18th, St. Mark’s once again was transformed into a vibrant island escape for Caribbean Night 2025—an unforgettable evening filled with music, flavor, and fellowship. Thanks to the dedication of the Caribbean Night Committee and many enthusiastic volunteers, guests were transported to a joyful tropical celebration that honored both Caribbean heritage and the spirit of our church community.

Caribbean Night has a cherished history at St. Mark’s. First launched in 1996, the event became an annual tradition before transitioning to a biennial celebration. Throughout its nearly three decades, its purpose has remained steadfast: to serve as a fundraiser supporting vital community outreach efforts, including programs managed by Episcopal Relief & Development and Food for the Poor, as well as addressing the church’s own building and grounds needs. Past proceeds have funded meaningful improvements—such as the replacement of banquet tables (’97 & ’23), the purchase of two cameras for live streaming worship services (‘23), and the installation of a new security system (‘19) and the basement water abatement system including a French drain (‘11) – and also supplemented the boiler replacement fund (‘09).

This year, Caribbean Night was not only a cultural celebration but a success in mission-driven stewardship. Over $11,000 was raised through ticket sales and generous donations, and the committee has designated the proceeds to support several important causes:

  • $2,500 — St. Mark’s Church AV needs, to enhance the worship experience and improve event quality
  • $1,500 — Food for the Poor, supporting international relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Melissa
  • $1,500 — Episcopal Relief & Development, also supporting Hurricane Melissa response
  • Remaining balance — To be held in a restricted line item for future building and grounds needs or another major parish priority, pending committee approval.

Guests were delighted by an exceptional lineup of entertainers who brought energy, culture, and artistry to the evening. Performances included music by Aubrey Jackman of Virgo Affairs, the brilliant steel pan of Andre DeSandies, dazzling salsa choreography by Baudilio Rivera and Lydiana Medellin, and the electrifying rhythms of Yahaya Kamate, Lead Drummer for the Center for Modern Dance. Additional performances by James E. Rohlehr, Clyde Ballard, Greg T. Barrett (the Jimbo Ro Band), and special guest bassist—St. Mark’s member-Muzz Skillings kept the celebration alive throughout the night.

No Caribbean celebration would be complete without flavorful cuisine, and this year’s offerings were unforgettable. Guests enjoyed delicious dishes catered by Island Spice on Teaneck Road, Café Metro on Cedar Lane, along with the red velvet sheet cake donated by Stephanie Stokes’ Stephanie’s Sweet Euphoria, and mouthwatering selections prepared by St. Mark’s own talented committee member chefs.

Caribbean Night 2025 was more than an event—it was an expression of community, generosity, and joy. Through shared culture and shared purpose, we continue to strengthen not only our parish family but the many lives touched by our outreach. We look forward to celebrating again in 2027!
