Four St. Markers Receive Lifetime Award
David P. Hegg Award recpients

Four members of St. Mark’s were honored on June 12th with the David P. Hegg II Lifetime Achievement Awards presented annually by the Senior Ministries of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark. The Hegg Awards are given annually to members of our diocese who are:

  • Age 60+.
  • A long-standing, active member of their congregation.
  • Made or makes contributions to the congregation and/or the diocese.

This year St. Mark’s honorees are:

  • Allison Davis

    Allison Davis, who has been a member of St. Mark’s for 37 years, has made significant contributions of her time and talents to St. Mark’s and the diocese in areas of audio-visual communication, youth education, and stewardship.  She has also served on the parish vestry.
    During the pandemic, Allison has been an integral part of St. Mark’s and Diocesan technology teams enabling online services. Her contributions include Church School/Youth Leadership, writer/interviewer for the Parish and Diocesan Voice Newsletters and coordinating special guest speakers. She has has been involved for 20 years with St. Mark’s Caribbean Night, a major fundraiser for the parish.

  • Elizabeth and James Hooper

    For 30+ years James and Elizabeth Hooper have been vital to the life, energy, and direction of St. Mark’s. James has served as an usher welcoming all through our doors, and chaired the Buildings & Grounds Committee, shepherding us through many major projects that keep our buildings safe and functioning.
    Elizabeth serves on the Vestry, Counters’ Guild, and volunteers in our Math Adventures and Word Play program. She was instrumental in forming our Green Team and bringing solar energy to St. Mark’s. Creating our joyous biannual Caribbean Night, celebrating the food, music, and color of their heritage has been one of the Hoopers’ greatest ministries.

  • Yanna Huls

    Yanna Huls has been a faithful member of St. Mark’s for over 25 years. She has served as a vestry member and currently serves as a warden. She headed up the successful rector search in 2019 and continues to be a vital and active participant in St. Mark’s and Diocesan
    projects.
    Yanna is a lector, organizer and leader of the women’s small-group faith ministry, lively member of the book group, and proud Education for Ministry (EFM) graduate. A professional singer, she has sung in the choir for many years. Yanna is known for her smile, wise counsel, and generosity!


In keeping with Diocesan COVID-19 protocols, this year’s 74 recipients from across the Diocese were honored as part of a special service, which was recorded in advance and livestreamed on Youtube on the afternoon of Trinity Sunday, June 12th. The Rev. Anne Thatcher, Rector of St. Peter’s: Morristown officiated and the Rt. Rev. Carlye J. Hughes, Bishop of Newark, offered the homily. The awards were presented by Scott Bennett, chair of Senior Ministries for the diocese.
