Maundy Thursday Service

On Thursday, April 16th, we observe Maundy Thursday, where the events of the “last supper” and Jesus’ betrayal and arrest are remembered.
The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a potluck dinner in Carroll Hall. Afterwards we will proceed into the church for a service that includes symbolic mutual hand-washing to recall Jesus’ modeling of charity towards his friends by washing their feet–a somewhat uncomfortably intimate task–and instructing for them to do likewise for one another. Maundy means “mandate” and is a reminder that these instructions were meant for us, too.
At the end of the service, all the trappings of worship–fabrics, candles and vessels–are ceremonially and reverently removed from the church and brought to a temporary “altar of repose” where meditative music will be playing.
You may join us in our barrier-free sanctuary or on Zoom.
St. Mark’s has been “Celebrating God’s Inclusive Love” since 1925. Our joyful and diverse community meets at the intersection of an ancient faith and modern thought, and we invite seekers, questioners and doubters of any religious background (or none).
