Bishop Carlye J. Hughes Visits St. Mark’s
On Sunday, October 22nd, the Rt. Rev. Carlye J. Hughes, XI Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark, made her triennial visit to St. Mark’s. She presided at our Holy Communion service and preached, then met with us informally at coffee hour followed by a meeting with the parish vestry.
Since she knew the majority of the parish was involved with Caribbean Night the previous evening, Bishop Hughes had insisted she wanted a “no-fuss” visit without causing a lot of extra work for us. “Come in your slippers!” she told us. Well, never ones to shy away from a good time, we took Her Grace at her word!
In her sermon based on the “render unto Caesar” story in St. Matthew’s Gospel, the Bishop acknowledged what an extraordinary and challenging time it is to be a Christian, particularly a progressive Christian in an increasingly diverse and secular world. She urged us to remember to “give unto God what is God’s” remaining grateful for all our gifts, and steadfast in our commitment to serve our community and one another.
