On Saturday, May 20th, high schooler Jaslyn Mitchell-Drake was among a group who received the sacramental rite of confirmation from the Rt. Rev. Carlye J. Hughes at the historic Trinity & St. Phillip’s Cathedral.

Jaslyn, who serves as an acolyte and lector at St. Mark’s among her many interests and responsibilities, participated in preparatory classes with other young people at St. Mark’s last year but due to a conflict was not able to be confirmed with the group.

Confirmation in the Episcopal Church represents an individual’s mature, public reaffirmation of the Christian faith and the baptismal promises. Since we are generally baptized as young children and have no ability to make such a commitment, confirmation takes place when a person is in high school or older.

Those who were baptized and confirmed in other Christian traditions and wish to formalize their tie to the Episcopal Church do so in a very similar rite called “reception” or “being received” which frequently takes place at the same ceremony as confirmation. While it is not necessary to be confirmed or received to receive Communion or participate in parish life, it is required to serve in various leadership roles within the church.
